Memorial Day is observed to honor and remember U.S. service members who died while serving in the military. It is a day of remembrance marked by ceremonies, visits to cemeteries and memorials, moments of silence, and the placing of flags and flowers on graves.

But did you know the holiday originated after the American Civil War and became a federal holiday in 1971. Today, many Americans also observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 p.m. local time to reflect on the sacrifices made by fallen military personnel.

Memorial Day is obse

Yesterday was another busy day knocking on doors. I also attended the Democrat RD20 meeting, where members of our Hispanic community shared heartbreaking stories of detention and, in some cases, deportation.

They spoke about loved ones who have lived and worked here for years — building families, contributing to our community, and calling this place home — only to have their lives suddenly torn apart. Their stories were painful, personal, and impossible to ignore.

Moments like these remind us that immigration policy is not just political debate; it affects real people, real families, and entire communities.
